What You Need
- A heat press
- Your DTF transfer from Long Island DTF Printing
- A foil sheet (Gold or Silver, included in kit)
- A garment or substrate
- A Teflon sheet or parchment paper
Application Instructions
Step 1: Apply the DTF Transfer
First, apply the DTF transfer to your garment using the standard method:
- 1Pre-press the garment for 3-5 seconds to remove moisture.
- 2Place the DTF transfer face-down on the garment.
- 3Press at 300-325 degrees Fahrenheit, medium pressure, for 15-20 seconds.
- 4Hot peel the PET film carrier.
Step 2: Position the Foil Sheet
Place the foil sheet color side up (shiny side facing away from the garment) directly over the pressed design. Make sure the foil covers the entire design area.
Step 3: Press the Foil
Close the heat press with the following settings:
- Temperature: 285 degrees Fahrenheit (140 degrees Celsius)
- Pressure: Light to medium pressure
- Time: 10-12 seconds
Step 4: Cold Peel the Foil Carrier
Allow the foil to cool completely before peeling. This is a cold peel -- do not peel while hot. Once cooled, gently lift the foil carrier sheet away from the garment. The metallic foil will remain bonded to the raised areas of the DTF transfer, creating a stunning metallic finish.
Tips for Best Results
- Foil works best on flat, solid designs and bold text. Fine detail lines and very small text may not pick up foil as consistently.
- Use a Teflon sheet between the foil carrier and the heat press upper platen to protect both surfaces.
- Do not over-press. Excessive time or temperature can cause the foil to adhere to areas outside the design or wrinkle.
- Experiment with layering. You can apply gold foil to some areas and silver to others by masking off sections with parchment paper during the foil press.
- Wait 24 hours before washing. Turn inside-out, cold water, tumble dry low.
